A Great Idea for Motivating Students

A while ago, I was meeting with a high school district that was wrestling with a familiar challenge: how do we motivate students to improve their grades in a way that actually works?

They had a creative idea — one I loved immediately. If a student had no Ds or Fs on Friday, they’d earn the privilege of going off‑campus for lunch the following week. A simple incentive, but one that students genuinely cared about.

The problem wasn’t the idea. The problem was how to implement it.

Who’s eligible? Who has a permission slip? Who’s on track with credits? Who needs to be excluded for disciplinary reasons? How do we notify parents and students? How do we verify eligibility at the door?

This is where a robust data warehouse quietly becomes the hero of the story.

Because the district already had nightly grade updates flowing into the warehouse through our data access plugin, the entire Open Lunch program suddenly became possible.

We sat down together and built exactly what they needed:

• Automatic Friday‑morning eligibility checks at 7:00 AM

• Grade, credit, permission‑slip, and override logic

• Parent email blasts with electronic signature links

• Student/parent notifications explaining eligibility — or the reason they weren’t eligible

• Weekly summary reports showing trends in Ds/Fs, credits, permissions, and participation

• A live admin dashboard to monitor check‑outs, check‑ins, and ineligible scans

• Real‑time badge scanning at the door to verify eligibility and log activity

What started as “We have an idea…” turned into a fully operational system that boosted engagement, improved communication, and helped move grades in the right direction.

This is the part of the work I love most — listening to a district’s vision and building the technology that makes it real.
